Respect Life Committee

From Womb to Tomb

We proclaim that human life is a precious gift from God; that each person who receives this gift has responsibilities toward God, self and others; and that society, through its laws and social institutions, must protect and nurture human life at every stage of its existence.

U.S. Catholic Bishops, Pastoral Plan for Pro-Life Activities, November 2001

Understanding Conscience

"In the life of following Jesus Christ, both great heroes and ordinary saints alike need the same thing: a well formed conscience."

"Conscience helps us hear the voice of God: it helps us recognize the truth about God and the truth about how we ought to live. Conscience is 'a judgment of reason' by which we determine whether an action is right or wrong."

"When we are bombarded with news, images, stories and sound bites, it's easy to become numb to the world around us. Conscience requires us to be attentive. We must listen to God, who speaks to us."

"To be actively pro-life is to contribute to the renewal of society through the promotion of the common good. It is impossible to further the common good without acknowledging and defending the right to life, upon which all the other inalienable rights of individuals are founded and from which they develop."

— Pope Saint John Paul II, Evangelium vitae, 101.
