Anointing of the Sick

Anointing of the Sick is the Sacrament that is received by those who are ill or suffering. By the sacred anointing and the prayer of the priest, the whole Church commends those who are sick to Christ. The sick person receives the Holy Spirit's gifts of strength, faith, peace and courage, and his or her suffering is united with the suffering of Christ for the building up of the Church (CCC nos. 1520-23).

People frequently refer to this Sacrament as "Last Rites." But that is a misnomer because there is no need to wait until the point of death to receive this Sacrament, it can be received as often as needed. It is best that it be celebrated when the individual is conscious, alert and is aware that they are receiving the Sacrament. Here at St. Patrick's, this Sacrament is celebrated both communally- within the Mass, and on an individual basis. An announcement will be made at Mass when we have an upcoming Healing Mass scheduled. Contact the Office to schedule an individual Anointing.
